| Song: Life Of A Salesman Artist: Yellowcard Album: Ocean Avenue Lyrics On
an opening doubt, besides the title, this song has no relation to
Arthur Miller's play (Death of a Salesman). It doesn't
condemn the American Dream, support communism, end in suicide, or any
of the other crap from Miller's play. Instead the song grasps the
relationship Willy had with his sons Biff and Happy and like the title
changes it into a positive. The song is written from the
perspective of a son admiring and praising his father. With
phrases like "Now I'm older I wanna be the same as you the same as
you", "Glad to call you my dad", and "Thank you for my life dad", the
songs displays a positive view of parental figures as opposed to
Miller's play and many modern songs. (Smile Empty Soul - Nowhere
Kids** and Silhouettes, Staind - For You**, Three Days Grace - Just
Like You and Home) The greatness of this song is not just in the
fact that it greatly surpasses the aforementioned songs in following
God's commandment "Honor your father and your mother" (Ex. 20:12), but
the song goes beyond honoring to the level of emulating. The song
provides an excellent picture of a father figure worthy of emulation,
one who teaches ("Taught me how to stand", "Taught me what was right"),
leads ("Took me by the hand"), understands ("Always understands"), and
leads by example ("Showed me how to be a better man"). After
hearing song after song condemning parents and promoting reckless
living, "Life Of A Salesman" is a refreshing glimmer of hope in
the modern music industry. A line from Silhouettes says "When I
have kids I won't put any chains on their wrists", so let's put
it this way 'Which type of person do you want filling society in the
next generation???'

| For those of you who know me (and those who don't) this is going to be
a new Xanga I've created for critiquing and analyzing popular
songs. Depending on the lyrics a bit of spirtual reflection or
application could also find it's way ino the posts. Eventually, I could
review entire CD's, but that would be a big chore...it would have to be
a new release by a popular band or artist. Well feel free to subscribe
and leave comments often.
Thanks,
Ryan
